Why Blog?

There is a great deal of confusion surrounding the use of blogs versus websites.

Real-time. A blog is nothing more than a dynamic website. This means that you can post an article, photo or video to your blog and have it up in minutes, whereas a website can take hours to incorporate new data.

Traffic. Everytime you update you blog, you are also “pinging” various update services, such as Google or Firefox. What does this mean for you? When an update service receives your “ping”, it indexes your blog for searching, thus making your blog that much more likely to come out on top of a search, as opposed to a website you update once a month.

Cost. Blogs are cheaper than websites. It does not cost anything to have a blog, although many people pay for customization (usually features, a special template, or the ability to design their own) or for a domain name (i.e. www.yourblog.com). Even including these costs, websites require a domain name, hosting (the service that actually retains your website), as well as templates, the ability to customize, etc.

Optimizing. Whether you have a blog, a website or both, odds are you have either a message you would like to get out (even if it’s just venting) or you have a product or service you are trying to sell. Whatever the case may be, it is important that your blog, website or both can be easily found. It is not only easier to optimize the content on your blog (the blog usually has an area for listing optimized words), but you optimize every post, which makes the blog more likely to be found in a keyword search.

Credibility. You build credibility with a blog because it is updated so frequently and so easily supports reader comments that a relationship is built with readers.

Feeds.
Most blogs have the ability to offer readers an RSS feed of the blog’s content and will update that feed automatically. Feeds running from a website typically require that you manually update the feed content.

Content Management. Blogs offer the ability to change your design with the click of a button (yes, even the free ones). They also provide you with tools to manage the functionality of the website and to incorporate various types of media easily, without any knowledge of coding. There ar eliterally thousands of free templates and plug-ins available for blogs. Content management can be difficult and expensive for a website, the extent of which varies significantly between providers.

Monetize. It is very easy to monetize a blog; in fact, most blog providers have a single button you click and you have the ability to specify where ads will be on your blog. Blog monetization (also known as making money blogging) is more difficult with a website because of its static nature.
