Facebook Private Photos NOT Private

image GreaseMonkey, a scripting utility for Firefox, provides creative developers and casual script writers the ability to do unique things with websites. Apparently such scripting creativity includes the ability to do things that aren’t necessarily mainstream. While browsing userscripts.org, I sorted the scripts by number of downloads and began reading through them. A couple pages into my browsing I found a scripted called “Facebook – view all photos” which lists several photo viewing features.

One feature provided , although likely unintentional, is the ability to view photos marked as private. The author admits that this unplanned feature works in mysterious and unreliable ways but since the script is freely available it wouldn’t take long, for someone with time and know-how, to create an improved or modified version.

I don’t believe that there is anything wrong with this but I do feel that some people trust sites such as Facebook and Myspace too much. The only sure fire way to protect your private information is to leave it in your paper filing system. Of course, given that everything is digital, this may be easier said than done. Ultimately you shouldn’t trust in your favorite social site to provide security. The primary intent of sites like Myspace and Facebook are to gather and share but not necessarily protect your information. You can find the “Facebook- view all photos” script and associated details at http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/11218 . Hopefully you don’t share anything private on your Facebook account…
