WebRanking - The Future Competitive Landscape, How Will You Rank?

What is WebRanking?

For the benefit of those who don’t know, web ranking a generic term used to describe a web page ranking system. Most web ranking systems are loose interpretations or variations of Googles proprietary method is called PageRank. Wikipedia says this about PageRank:

“PageRank was developed at Stanford University by Larry Page (hence the name Page-Rank) and later Sergey Brin as part of a research project about a new kind of search engine. The project started in 1995 and led to a functional prototype, named Google, in 1998. Shortly after, Page and Brin founded Google Inc., the company behind the Google search engine. While just one of many factors which determine the ranking of Google search results, PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of Google’s web search tools.”

What the future holds

Google is still the king of search but it wasn’t always that way, remember Northern Light or Magellan?  Google is a big target and plenty of Internet entrepreneurs are seeking to take on the PageRank system. The two emerging threats that I am aware of are IZEARank RealRank system and SEOmoz Linkscape . I am sure there are other emerging competitors that I have not seen but these two are interesting to me.

What about Alexa?

Although Alexa is a well known web ranking system I wouldn’t call it new. The company has been around since 1996. I believe that they can reinvent themselves and perhaps even purchase some of the emerging threats.

Your Thoughts?

If anyone is aware of other cutting edge ranking systems I would love to hear about them. Please feel free to leave comments or send me a tweet . I think its important for the ranking methods to evolve and remain competitive. What do you think?
