clip_image002If you are just starting out with your blogging efforts, like I am, then you are probably interested in producing quality content to improve your standings within search engines and enhance  you’re blog community. Here are excellent tips and best practices for publishing articles I found within a couple publishing websites.

Improve Blog Content

The editorial guidelines article from ezinearticles.com, provides fantastic information on how to optimize your title to improve readership, recommended article size ( 400-750 words, I always wondered about this) and the use of keywords within an article to improve readership.  “Most authors are wasting their time producing dozens to hundreds of high quality articles that never reach a fraction of their traffic potential. It’s a darn shame.” (ezinearticles.com, Christopher M. Knight). This is a tremendous advice for someone just starting out with a blog.  It’s nice to have a resource that provides such rich information about best practices.

Another great place for information on writing practices and guidelines is helium.com. Helium’s article on news writing provides excellent guidance using a simple formula. This formula is what they refer to as the sixth commandment of writing. The six commandments that helium recommends are as follows:

The six commandments of news writing:

  1. “Be concise, compelling and accurate.
  2. “Present your story in plain English. Avoid writing in abstract terms and don’t use jargon. Don’t write in clichés or use superlatives: The purpose of a news story is to inform your readers and make them understand the topic at hand.
  3. “Use the active voice as often as possible.
  4. “Remain objective. News writing is about presenting a fair and balanced story: Never use “I.”
  5. “Write to readers. Write articles that your audience can relate to and understand. Learn how to be simple, but not boring.
  6. “Express the negative in a positive form.

Prior to Publishing

Additionally, helium recommends that you asked yourself three simple questions prior to publishing any article.  Those questions are as follows:

  • Have I said what I meant to say?
  • Have I put it as concisely as possible?
  • Have I put things as simply as possible?
